Wonderful news for residents across Wales! The UK Government has announced that 50 publicly-funded rural 4G mobile mast upgrades are now live. This fantastic development is part of the industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, marking a significant step forward in connecting communities. This latest milestone builds on the 30 upgrades that were active in July 2025, showing rapid and consistent progress.
The SRN project is a brilliant example of collaboration, combining £501m in public funding with £532m of private investment from major mobile operators. By sharing existing masts and building new ones where needed, the project is successfully expanding access to high-speed mobile broadband. Last year, the initiative already achieved a major goal by extending geographic 4G coverage from at least one operator to 95% of the UK.
The project has been so successful that it reached its first target a year ahead of schedule, ensuring that 96% of the UK's landmass can now access a 4G network from at least one provider. For Wales specifically, the target is for 95% coverage from at least one operator. The focus is now shifting to the next exciting phase: reducing Total Not-Spot areas by January 2027 to ensure even more people can stay connected.
This initiative involves key partners including O2, Vodafone, Three UK, and EE, all working together to bring reliable mobile broadband to rural areas. Whether you are looking to stream, work from home, or simply stay in touch with loved ones, these upgrades mean more opportunities for everyone to get online.
