This funding comes from the UK Space Agency's impressive four-year, £160m Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) programme. This latest investment builds upon a strong foundation of support already in place. Regular updates have highlighted the government's dedication to this sector, including an initial commitment of £18m to a first round of three projects at the start of 2025. These ongoing projects, which will continue for two more years, are focused on developing essential user terminals, active antennas, and on-board regenerative processors. The new funding will similarly back advanced technologies that are vital for the future of global connectivity.
The global market for these services is currently worth around £40 billion and is growing at over 10% annually. This expansion is driven by a rising demand for navigation, positioning, and broadband internet. Beyond the C-LEO programme, the government has also separately invested £155m to develop alternative ways of delivering accurate Positioning, Navigation, and Timing solutions. These efforts complement GPS and support everything from mobile 4G and 5G signals to in-car Sat Nav systems. Additionally, £6.9m has been allocated to improve satellite optical links and 5G NTN solutions, ensuring a robust and reliable digital infrastructure for everyone.
