Exciting New Vision for London's Digital Future

Great news for residents across the capital! The Mayor of London and London Councils have today published a brand new London Infrastructure Framework (LIF). This forward-thinking document establishes a shared, long-term vision for London's critical economic priorities all the way through to 2050. It is a fantastic step towards ensuring every home and business has access to the modern connectivity they deserve.

A key highlight of this framework is the dedicated focus on improving digital access. The plan aims to tackle the 390,000 premises across the city that are currently "unserved" by gigabit broadband. By addressing this, the framework seeks to unlock significant opportunities for housing developments, drive job creation, and upgrade the wider transport network. The report notes that increasing pressure on essential systems means greater investment is needed, and this new strategy is the perfect vehicle to deliver that support.

A Pipeline of Priority Projects

The London Infrastructure Framework sets out an impressive pipeline of 51 priority projects covering transport, energy, waste, water, flood risk, and digital connectivity. These schemes are designed to be the most impactful ways to unlock London's growth and ensure long-term resilience. While the plan covers many vital areas, the focus on digital connectivity is particularly encouraging for those waiting for faster speeds.

It is wonderful to see that progress is already well underway. Currently, 92.89% of London premises can access a gigabit broadband network, which is a very positive figure. Furthermore, national forecasts suggest that by January 2028, up to 97% of UK premises could be connected. This new framework will help accelerate these improvements, ensuring the remaining areas are brought up to speed as quickly as possible.
