There is wonderful news for the future of internet connectivity across the United Kingdom! Network access provider Openreach is actively preparing a groundbreaking new 100Gbps capable Cablelink solution. This innovative development is designed to support their upcoming 8.5Gbps full fibre broadband products, ensuring that homes and businesses can enjoy incredibly fast speeds in the years to come.
This exciting advancement is part of a broader, positive investment strategy. Openreach is currently investing £15 billion to build full fibre infrastructure across 25 million UK premises by December 2026. With approximately 22 million premises already connected, the plan aims to potentially reach up to 30 million premises by 2030, bringing world-class connectivity to even more communities.
To support these ambitious speed goals, a new 100G Cablelink Service Connect product is being developed. While the current fastest links available are 10Gbps, this new solution will provide the necessary capacity to handle the demands of future 8.5Gbps FTTP products. Initially, retail providers participating in the XGS-PON pilot, which is due to get underway from 23rd March 2026, will use multiple 10G Cablelinks to ensure smooth capacity management. This is a helpful transitional step that ensures reliability while the new 100G system is perfected.
The development of this new service is a work-in-progress, with trials expected to begin around this time next year. This careful planning ensures that when the technology launches, it will be robust and ready to serve everyone. The rollout plan for the period between 2026 and 2030 is being carefully considered alongside Ofcom's market review, ensuring a stable and beneficial environment for all users.
These developments mark a significant milestone in the UK's digital journey, promising faster, more reliable connections for everyone. Whether you are looking to stream, work from home, or simply stay connected, the future looks brighter and faster than ever before.
