Exciting 5G Expansion Reaches Scottish Communities

There is wonderful news for mobile users across Scotland as O2 (Virgin Media) announces a significant expansion of their next-generation 5G Standalone (5GSA) mobile broadband network. This exciting development means that a vast number of towns, cities, and villages are now connected to ultra-fast, reliable internet, bringing the benefits of modern technology to homes and businesses alike.

Connecting Communities Nationwide

The network has been successfully switched on in 66 large towns and cities, 175 smaller towns, and an impressive 1,120 villages throughout Scotland. This major rollout ensures that over 4 million people and businesses in the country now have access to this advanced service. The expansion is part of a wider UK-wide initiative, with the new 5G+ network now live in over 700 locations, covering more than 70% of the UK's population.

This new technology offers a pure end-to-end 5G experience, moving away from older infrastructure to deliver superior performance. Users can expect ultra-low latency times, greater energy efficiency, and notably faster speeds, particularly for uploads. The network also features improved support for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, enhanced reliability, and increased security. These upgrades are a key component of O2's £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, which aims to provide at least 90% outdoor coverage in every location reached.

Areas Now Covered

The rollout brings these benefits to a diverse range of areas, including Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll & Bute, Ayrshire, Clackmannanshire, Dumfries & Galloway, Dunbartonshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh City, Fife, Glasgow City, The Highlands, Lanarkshire, Midlothian, Moray, Perth & Kinross, Renfrewshire, Scottish Borders, and Stirlingshire. Additionally, specific locations such as West Lothian, Oban, Rothesay, North Berwick, Thurso, Fort William, Aviemore, Strathaven, Lossiemouth, Kinross, Pitlochry, and Dunblane are now enjoying these enhanced connectivity options.
